Social networks feed the desire of the users to keep the connection to their friends and for some, establish new affiliations. However in the long run, nothing beats the classic "hello" over the phone and the warm voice of excitement.

We don't need to live a complicated life. But in the world of blogging, we sometimes end up with more applications than we really need. The reasons for such behavior vary. In the end though, we realize that we only need certain tools in our life.

@dave - can I borrow some of that free time?

@simon - I knew what you meant :)
Very true that work isn't as hard, but quite sad that we've still found a way to have health issues - they've just morphed into stress and carpal tunnel.

Great read Tamera, and interesting points.
Add in another dimension, I say we are spoilt on so many levels
a) # of contacts of various degrees
my point is ...twitter would be a great idea if I had only 7 friends...would be great to hear their updates
and facebook super walls wouldn't be painful if i had only 7 friends...would be funny to see that joke or link ONCE

b) # of applications and no universal passport to avoid adding all your contacts AGAIN
In this day and age its impossible to keep up with everyone at all times - where does that leave your own time?
I spend hours just sifting through information some days - so the Autumn of the Multitaskers is a daily reality

c) time + speed of technology
Dave is right "too much time on our hands", good economy agreed yes and possibly also due
also to having speed at our fingertips, communications is through the roof...crazy when you think
hard work for tech-interactive-industry-related people is not as hard as what hard work was
say 60 years ago... nobody broke their back or got black lung from QWERTY texting yet?
we are blessed to have what we have.

and hence I say (with lounge in cheek)
that if Abraham Lincoln were alive and blogging today he would say with a copacetic grin
"you can update all of the people some of the time
and you can update all of the people some of the time
but you cannot update all of the people all of the time"

People have WAY too much free time these days due to a good economy. In 2 years (when the recession starts) you won't be writing posts like this because you'll be looking for ways to stay ahead of your competition and making sure that you beat them in your new business pitches.
Besides, it isn't like Executives use to are really aware of Twitter, it is just a fad.
