I think that to provide value, something should either entertain people or educate them. 
As you said, contests that simply involve retweeting/reposting the brand name aren&#039;t providing value, they&#039;re spamming. 

I think a great use of using social networks for promotional use is the marketing company behind the new video game Bionic Commando. They got some famous DJs to provide remixes of the soundtrack, and sent those out to a bunch of music blogs along with artwork from the game. People were happy to share the music because it was something they wanted to hear, and something they wanted to their friends to hear. It got the game&#039;s name out there just as easily as Moon Fruit style retweets, but at least there was the value of getting a new mp3 attached to it.</description>
